We are located in the historical Highland Park business district on the North side of Des Moines, Iowa. Our merchandise celebrates simpler times through quality craftsmanship of everyday goods. You will find useful items for your home, kitchen, desk, and even your belly. We strive to provide an experience that feels like home; where everyone is welcome and where anyone can find something to treasure.Â
Our story.
My name is Mallory, and I am the owner of Des Moines Mercantile. My husband and I have developed much love for the North side of our city, Des Moines. I am a lover of history — specifically, times that were slower paced; where things were made to last, made to be used, and made to tell a story. My hope is that Des Moines Mercantile is a place where you can find products inspired by simpler times that help tell your story.

While not everything in our shop is Iowa-made, upwards of 80% of it is. Meaning that when you make a purchase here, you’re not only supporting us, you’re supporting your local farmers, artists, and artisans.
Hand-crafted
Because so many of the products we carry are hand-crafted by our makers, each item will be truly unique. Every item made by hand feels like an item made by hand, something that was created with love and attention and skill by its maker. We take pride in providing a place for these items to find their forever homes.

Our home is Highland Park
Once known as a bustling streetcar suburb for its easy access to downtown Des Moines, the Highland Park Historic Business District has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1998. Located on the border of the Oak Park and Highland Park neighborhoods in the north-central section of Des Moines, Des Moines Mercantile is just one of several local businesses working to revive the area.
